March 16, 2011 — Whether it’s from melted snow or broken pipes, water damage is a common problem this time of year. Not only can it ruin part of your home and personal belongings, but repeated claims can often mean a boost in your insurance premiums.
Although most homeowners’ insurance policies guard against unexpected leaks, certain types of water damage may not be covered. Here are some tips to minimize the risk of water damage as the winter freeze begins to thaw:
- Divert snow away from your home and ensure that snow is removed around the home, doors and basement windows.
- Ensure street catch basins are not blocked as these prevent snow from building up on street level and seeping towards properties.
- Protect your valuables – if a home is prone to water damage, consider moving valuables away from high risk areas, such as the basement.
